Battle of the Somme

The Battle of the Somme was a British offensive in World War I that raged from July 1916 to November 1916. The battle was one of the largest and costliest ones of the war, with the British losing almost 60,000 men (close to 20,000 dead and 40,000 wounded) in the first day of the battle. Originally aimed at breaking through the German lines and drawing German forces away from other critical regions, the operation, also known as the Somme Offensive, cost the British over 600,000 men (either dead or wounded) and the Germans around 400,000. Conflicting interpretations of the battle's significance exist. While some argue the battle shattered the German army's ability to fight by depleting its reserves of manpower, others argue that the battle merely highlighted the costly nature of trench warfare in World War I.
